Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Fukagawa

Tomioka Hachiman Shrine is Tokyo's largest Hachiman shrine founded in 1627. Hachiman shrines which are found all over Japan worship the god of martial arts and war.

The shrine's summer festival is famous and it is counted as one of the three largest festival since the time of Edo period. Spectators splash water on the mikoshi bearers.

The shrine is also famous as a sumo shrine - the birthplace of sumo tournaments. Kanjin-sumo tournament began to be held at the shrine in 1684. Kanjin is raising money for buildings of shinto shrines and buddhist temples.
